Making Custom Jewelry Components

How to make custom jewelry components

When I say I make jewelry components, I mean it. I love knowing that most components in the jewelry pieces I make are made by my hands. I love doing this because whatever I’m making can be customized to make sense with the jewelry piece.

In addition to making the pendants out of 999 fine silver, I love making jump rings and clasps (if the necklace chains do not come with one already) that can look as delicate as the fine metal I’m working with. I can even make them as big or as small as the final jewelry piece requires. In other words, I let the necklace or earring speak to me…is that weird?

Work bench for jewelry making with several tools and findings

This is one of my work benches where I sit and make jewelry components and assemble the jewelry pieces to get them ready to sell. Yes, I do use all of these tools at some point during the assembling. Again, this is only one section of the bench. I have built-in shelves on both sides. I look at it like this, hard work needs many different tools😁

Handmade hook and eye clasp

Shown here I made my own hook and eye clasp made out of sterling silver plated wire for a necklace I made for myself. Because it’s a handmade silver clasp, I was able to make it as small and delicate as the rest of the necklace in the same color, another reason I love making my own jewelry components. I can use any color I want that will compliment the rest of the jewelry piece.

Furthermore, in many of the SEH Designs necklaces I sell on my website, I made the jump rings. I mean, why not? If I can customize anything for my customers, why would I want to pass up that opportunity? Well, I wouldn’t. I want my jewelry pieces to be tailored to my customers needs, so if I need to customize a component to make that happen I will.

If you are a jewelry maker looking for more ways to bring your technique into your jewelry pieces, I recommend that you begin with jump rings since those are not only extremely easy to make and very economical, but you can use many different colors and sizes. Just remember that the smaller the number, the thicker the wire.
